It is more important than ever before that everybody tries to be as environmentally aware as possible in order to promote the sustainable development of our planet. This blog will explain what it means to be environmentally aware and why it is important.
What is environmental awareness?
Environmental awareness is understanding how your behaviour impacts the environment and being committed to making changes to help protect the planet. Recent environmental movements have persuaded many more people to make lifestyle changes to live in ways which are more environmentally friendly.
Being environmentally friendly means doing what you can to reduce the impact you have on the environment. Some of the ways that you might be affecting the environment include the ways in which you consume energy, your use of natural resources and waste.
More large-scale problems include oil drilling, deforestation and the generation and wastage of plastic goods. Individuals can have a positive effect on these problems with small lifestyle changes though. Something as little as reducing the amount of plastic you buy or ensuring you recycle can have a hugely positive impact on the environment.
Why is it important?
Research shows that since the industrial revolution, the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased by more than a third. More than anything else, this demonstrates just how much of an impact human activity has had and continues to have on greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, it is our responsibility as humans to change our behaviour in order to protect the environment.
Because of this rise in greenhouse gas emissions, it is estimated that global temperatures may increase by more than two degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Although this may not sound like much, this would mean extreme climate change which would include natural disasters such as hurricanes, droughts and floods. These conditions, among many others, would put biodiversity, human welfare and wildlife in danger. All of this because we as a society have lived in such an unsustainable way for the past few decades, putting the security of our natural resources at risk, too.
It’s vital that everybody understands their impact on the environment and does what they can to attempt to promote sustainable development.
Every single person has a responsibility to be more environmentally friendly and reduce their carbon foot print. It is also crucial that we teach everybody about the importance of being environmentally aware to ensure that the lives of future generations won’t be put in jeopardy because of our actions.
