The Teaching Garden at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

USS Arizona MemorialAs Veterans Day approaches, ServiceNation: Mission Serve is busy planning 11 high profile service projects in 11 cities across the country on 11/11/11.  The “Veterans Day 11/11/11” project is a national call to service and is designed to establish Veterans Day as a day of service and celebration. Through the support of our national corporate sponsor Bank of America, ServiceNation is partnering with the US Chamber of Commerce for a joint hiring fair and service project at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu, Hawaii. ServiceNation: Mission Serve is working in partnership with the American Heart Association and the Bishop Museum to install a Teaching Garden with military school children.

The American Heart Association (AHA) has developed a new approach to healthy living through their hands on Teaching Gardens. By pairing up with schools across the nation, the American Heart Association brings together children and adult volunteers to construct garden boxes, and plant seeds. The students are taught how to nurture growing plants, while being taught the value of good eating habits.

The Teaching Garden, founded in 2010 by Kelly Meyer, has already installed dozens of gardens at schools and parks across the country.  In Hawaii, a special partnership with the Bishop Museum will enable native Hawaiian flora to become a key focus of the garden.  Botanists and cultural practitioners will teach the children about the importance of indigenous plant species and native conservation. Ultimately, the results of this project—a community service effort—will produce fruits and vegetables to be used for school lunch programs, as well as serving as a continuing symbol of the connections between the military community and the local and Hawaiian communities.

This past July, ServiceNation partnered with the US Chamber of Commerce to host a hiring fair for veterans and military spouses as part of the events put on to welcome The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Los Angeles.  This hiring fair, called Mission Serve: Hiring Our Heroes, Los Angeles, was the largest of the of the 100 hiring fairs that the Chamber is hosting over the course of a year.  ServiceNation is privileged to be able to work with the Chamber again in Honolulu for Veterans Day.  With this second incarnation of the joint hiring fair-service project model, we expect to be joined by celebrities, musicians, civic leaders, and military families, for an amazing day at Pearl Harbor!

The Honolulu event will be the culmination of ServiceNation’s 11 events for Veterans Day, and will actually be held on November 14th.  It gives us such great pleasure to be joined by so many supporters and partners to show that Veteran’s Day is a national day of celebration and service.  The continued efforts of develop 11 high profile service events is crucial to displaying our nations commitment to collaborative national service.
