ServiceNation today helped announce the creation a new campaign designed to create a wide array of opportunities for veterans to successfully convert their leadership operational training into positive civilian roles in our communities nationwide. Got Your 6 brings together nearly every major studio, broadcast and cable network, talent agency, and guild in the entertainment industry, along with top-tier non-profit organizations in an unprecedented show of support for veterans and military families.
“Got your six” is a military expression that means “I’ve got your back, and you’ve got mine.”
Through star-studded public service announcements, script integrations for TV and film projects, and creation of original digital content, the campaign will leverage the reach of the entertainment industry to create a new conversation in America, one focused on ensuring that our nation’s veterans are seen as community leaders and civic assets.
ServiceNation - a campaign of Be The Change, Inc. - serves as the organizing body and fiduciary agent behind Got Your 6 and will coordinate all aspects of the campaign.
“Over the next five years, more than one million service members will return to civilian life,” said Chris Marvin, the Director of Civilian-Military Partnerships for ServiceNation & Managing Director of Got Your 6. “As we welcome this generation of veterans home, it is crucial that we view them and their families not as burdens, but as leaders and civic assets. Through an unprecedented collaboration between the entertainment industry, top non-profits, and the federal government, the Got Your 6 campaign challenges all Americans to view our returning veterans as a critical resource and to join with them in reinvigorating our communities. This is a call to action for all Americans.”
“On behalf of the entire entertainment industry, we are proud to be engaging with our veterans through the Got Your 6 campaign,” said Ron Meyer, President and Chief Operating Officer, Universal Studios and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “Together, we are uniting to bring awareness to this incredibly important issue of bringing our country's trained leaders home to be a valued part of our communities across the nation.”
Beyond using entertainment to raise awareness of these issues, Got Your 6 has partnered with top-tier non-profit organizations, each of whom have made unprecedented service commitments toward helping position veterans and military families for success in their return to civilian life. The campaign will focus on six pillars of reintegration: jobs; education; health; housing; family; and leadership. Working with a lead non-profit organization in each area, the campaign aims to achieve significant progress across the six key pillars of reintegration:
Jobs: Hiring 500,000 Heroes
In coordination with the Got Your 6 campaign, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes program and its partners commit to facilitating commitments to hire 500,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014.
Education: Completing the Mission
In coordination with the Got Your 6 campaign, Student Veterans of America, the Pat Tillman Foundation, and their partners will collect pledges from administrators at 500 colleges and universities to increase “veteran friendly” resources by June 2014.
Health: De-mystifying PTSD
In coordination with the Got Your 6 campaign, Give an Hour and its partners will lead a program to educate 100,000 graduate students in mental health disciplines on the unique issues of veterans and military families.
Housing: Ending Veteran Homelessness
In coordination with the Got Your 6 campaign, the 100,000 Homes Campaign and its partners are leading an effort to house 10,000 chronically homeless veterans by July 2014.
Family: Educating the Educators
In coordination with the Got Your 6 campaign, Blue Star Families, the Military Child Education Coalition, and their partners will convene major professional education organizations and develop a plan to train one million primary and secondary school educators, by December 2014, to identify and help military children deal with the challenges they face in the school environment.
Leadership: Continuing the Mission of Service
In coordination with the Got Your 6 campaign, The Mission Continues, Team Rubicon, and their partners will engage veterans and military family members in one million hours of volunteer service in communities nationwide by July 2013.

ServiceNation is a campaign to increase national service opportunities and elevate service as a core ideal and problem solving strategy in America. The campaign is focused on two main initiatives: building a permanent grassroots constituency to advance service legislation and challenging the American public to view returning military veterans as civic assets and leaders who will reinvigorate our communities. ServiceNation envisions a day when a commonly asked question in this country is ‘Where do you serve?’ and when all Americans have the opportunity to serve in order to tackle pressing social challenges and strengthen our democracy.
