Rally for AmeriCorps

One of the best ways to ensure that service remains funded is to make sure that everyone understands why you support it and to show them just how many people support.

For all of you members of ServiceNation in the Boston area, we invite you to join with hundreds of others at Rally for AmeriCorps.

Here’s why they plan on holding the rally (and, even if you can't make it or don't live in Boston, it's great inspiration):

We all know about the hard work of our friends and classmates serving in AmeriCorps through programs like Teach For America, City Year, and Citizen Schools. Every day, they work hard for low pay in order to strengthen communities and serve our country.

We value this work because we know it is an investment in our future. This work is a good deal for the American people, not a waste of taxpayer dollars.

This week the Congress voted to eliminate funding for AmeriCorps. If we do not support the work of our friends who are serving our country, we will all suffer the consequences.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is visiting Harvard on Thursday, February 24, and we need to show him how much we support service funding. Several different groups, organizations and citizens have joined together to organize a rally in front of the Kennedy School of Government. Join other AmeriCorps supporters and show your representatives the importance of service and the power of a citizen-led movement.

Here are the event details:

Where: Harvard Kennedy School of Government, at the corner of JFK Street and Memorial Drive
When: Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 5:15 PM
Why: To show how much you support AmeriCorps

Why spend your Thursday night at a rally? Joining other concerned citizens is a great way to leverage the power of a citizen movement and there is truly strength in numbers.

If you need more incentive, here’s what Oliver Gould had to say about why he’s attending the rally in a recent blog post:

Whatever the state of our national finances, we are not broke when 75,000 young people give themselves to national service every year.  We are not broke when the future leaders of this country stand with their communities against the greatest challenges we face today.

Show our leaders in Congress that these cuts are more than a line item on a budget.  We know Americorps is worth the investment, and our fellow citizens need to know as well.

The BTC intern team is geared up and ready to go for this event, and we invite you to join us and hundreds of others in standing up for national service. This is a student-run movement and really emphasizes the important role young people continue to play in working to make our country a better place for all us.

Check out the Facebook event or the Rally for AmeriCorps website for more details, and join us on Thursday as we stand for AmeriCorps.

And wherever you are, make sure you sign up for District Day this Friday. Join members of ServiceNation and other concerned citizens from across the nation to protest the elimination of the Corporation for National and Community Service and save AmeriCorps, SeniorCorps and Learn and Serve America.

Planning on going to the event? Tweet at us @saveservice and we'll retweet you. Take lots of pictures, too. We always love sharing inspiration.

Are there rallies to save AmeriCorps, SeniorCorps or service in your hometown? Let us know about them, and we’ll feature them here.
