Philanthropy Meets March Madness?

Subscribe to the Blog RSS Feed

We knew that some smart nonprofit would manage to fuse the two, and the prize goes to a very innovative philanthropic outfit called the One Percent Foundation. They have launched Grant Madness! Here is how it works:

Welcome to One Percent Foundation's 1st Annual Grant Madness!
Grant Madness is just like a normal March Madness pool, except that instead of winning cash you win the right to choose which non-profit will receive the money.

It's just $10 and you could win the opportunity to dole out a big grant!

OPF engages people between the ages of 18-39 in philanthropy. If that's you, please join our pool!

Genius, right? Well, it makes a lot of sense given the One Percent Foundation's overall mission of engaging Millennials in low-dollar philanthropy to build a culture of giving. Here's how they describe it:

The One Percent Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to engaging young adults in philanthropy. The Foundation is a giving circle - a group of young adults who pool their funds and time to strengthen their communities, while at the same time increasing their understanding of and participation in philanthropy.

The name comes from their recommendation that we all try and give one-percent of our earnings to worthy causes, and they have an excellent calculator to get you started. Once you join (165 are in the giving circle so far) you also get to help decide where grants go. It's a beautiful idea, and our friends at MyImpact have already joined forces with the One Percent Foundation. To learn more, browse their website, or check out this interview with OPF founder Daniel Kaufman over at our favorite Social Citizens blog.

Now if we could only get THIS one percent involved:
