YouTube is owned by Google, whose informal motto is "Don't Be Evil." Well, one way not to be evil is simply not to do anything, um, evil. But you can also be super un-evil by actually doing good. And YouTube, which is already an incredible asset for any idealist with a vision, has come up with yet another way to do serious good. It's a channel called YouTube Video Volunteers that is dedicated to inspiring the creation of videos that support worthy causes.

Here's the channel's "About Me" description:

Video Volunteers is a simple way for you to help raise awareness for causes you care about, and compete for recognition of your work on the YouTube homepage.

Each month, the channel will feature a different relevant issue on the Video Volunteers channel with a new guest curator, and you could have the opportunity to showcase your work (and your favorite org) to a huge audience.

This month, Video Volunteers (which has almost 14,000 subscribers) wants the world out there to help serve the hungry as we head into Thanksgiving. So they are calling for video testimonials about hunger relief organizations. Getting involved is simple:

  1. Choose an organization that is fighting hunger in America
  2. Make a video promoting that organization's work
  3. Submit the video to YouTube Video Volunteers by Nov. 21

What's the payoff? The top 3 videos will be featured on the YouTube homepage later this month.

All the details can be found on the Video Volunteers channel page. We have some great hunger relief organizations in the ServiceNation coalition--Share Our Strength, the NY City Coalition Against Hunger and DC Central Kitchen--that would be worthy of video promotion. But the goal of the campaign is to build awareness, so if you know a local food bank or hunger-fighting non-profit that also deserves a little video love and an online audience then by all means get to work on a great video about what they do. And the Video Volunteers page also has a list of hunger relief organizations for you to browse (if you are a non-profit fighting hunger and want to be listed go here and click the "For Nonprofits" button).

Of course, for a video contest like this it also makes sense to summarize what it is all about in a, er, video. Roll tape!
